Behind the scenes with and the little dog laughed

Today we’d like to introduce you to handmade kids designer and sewing extraordinaire Kylie Platt from and the little dog laughed. And the little dog laughed - designer interview

And the little dog laughed is…
Fun, nostalgic, whimsical, traditional with a touch of modern… an attempt at recreating my own childhood.

The reason I chose to start my own business is…
I have ALWAYS wanted to own my own business of some form or another… little did I know that fantasy and reality are two completely different things! I have always loved creating; and the little dog laughed was ‘born’ just prior to my second child was born…. that nesting bug gets me every time. Now three years later (and three children!) it has grown to become such a big and fantastic part of me with endless possibilities.

When it comes to sewing and crafts, I learned everything I know from…
My Nan… I spent many hours in the back room of my Nan’s house sewing and making things. She had boxes of stuff (ribbons, threads, fabrics, buttons) and I could lose myself in there forever. She would be highly amused if she knew what it all led to!!

My creative process involves…
I am an expat living in Hong Kong and have been there for 10 years now, so I absolutely love going to a place called sham shui po that is full of everything that used to be in my Nan’s back room but on a bigger scale. I get lost there for hours (literally, there are streets and streets of fabrics and ribbons.  It brings out the bowerbird in me).  Then I take it all home and go from there!

The business achievement I am most of proud of is…
Getting my first real stockist; it was a store in the UK. I couldn’t believe that someone was actually buying from my range to sell to the public!! It has also been great building the brand and getting recognition from people I have just met who have either bought or been given an item from my range.

If I were to explain what I do in three sentences to a five year old, I would say…
I get to make things all day and get paid for it  (I know, that is only one sentence).

The number one thing that most people don’t know about me is…
I am also a speech pathologist.

The funniest thing that has happened to me recently is…
I laugh every day of the week with my kids; they constantly make me look, as kids do, at the world in a completely different way. On a less serious note, I was in a fit of giggles the other day that started with something completely not funny and I ended up laughing so hard I was crying.

If I were to write an autobiography about my life, the title would read…
“Smell the Roses”… I think that life is what you make of it and if you make the most of every opportunity that comes your way (and often these opportunities come when you do take time out to look at what is going on around you) then who knows where it may lead.  I also try to apply this with my kids; take time out with them in their world and you learn so much.

And finally, I will have reached my ‘dream business goal’ the day I…
I feel like I have already reached part of it. I feel so lucky to have gotten where I have as I absolutely love what I do. There are so many things that I want to do with my brand and places I want to take it.  At the same time though, I want to keep it small enough that it continues to have the ‘handmade’ feel and fun element to it.

On the practical side – one of my goals was to move into my own studio which I have just done. Next is to employ someone to do all the other stuff that I can’t or don’t want to do so I can just design all day…

Thank you Kylie, we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you better.
