Behind the scenes with Lisa from the red thread

Today’s designer interview takes you behind the scenes with Lisa Tilse, designer and brains behind the red thread. Lisa’s store is a treasure trove of crafty bits and pieces and her blog is one of our favourite reads. Here is a little insight into Lisa’s life, her loves and her uncanny likeness to Angelina Jolie…

Sweetie petites dolls by the red thread

This is Freddie with his big sister Ginger. Freddie is the latest edition to the sweetie petites doll kits range. You can purchase him online at the red thread.

The red thread is…
Named after a beautiful Chinese belief that we are connected to those in our lives who we are destined to know and love, and nothing can break that link.

My workspace looks like…
A bomb has hit it right now. It’s always one extreme or the other: a complete tip, or not a thing out of place. Either way, I could definitely do with some more space.

My art is influenced by…
Vintage finds – storybook illustrations, colours, designs. I’m also influenced by Japanese and Scandinavian design and art.

My favourite materials to work with are…
Paper and fabric. I have a huge collection of papers ranging from stunning Japanese papers to vintage paper ephemera. I also have quite a lot of fabric which perplexes my 6 year old daughter Roxy because she thinks I never sew! And my computer – it’s a tool, not a material, but I love doing digital illustrations.

My favourite memories from my childhood are…
Driving home from a long day at the beach, sunburnt and salty, with all the windows down. Christmas – always a big event in our family. Never being bored. My devoted, patient and loving Mum.

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen is…
Wow, that’s a big question. At the risk of sounding incredibly corny… my daughter’s face the first time I saw her. Becoming a mother was a long and arduous journey for me, and when I first laid eyes on Roxy I just couldn’t believe how lucky I was. (I warned you it might sound corny!)

If I were a superhero, my super power would be…
To crochet. As someone who does a lot of different creative and crafty things, I find it incredibly frustrating that crocheting just doesn’t click with me. I’m usually good at things… but not that! So I view it as a super power that I just don’t possess. I’d be Crochet Girl.

The lead role in a movie about my life would be played by…
Angelina Jolie. I look nothing like her, but hey, wouldn’t it be nice if people thought that I did?!

My idea of complete happiness is…
A big sunny studio with massive windows. Being able to create without having to make a living out of it. Travelling. Being with my daughter and husband. Waking up to my own body clock – instead of my 6 year old’s… not necessarily in that order.

My ambitions for 2010 are…
See my answers to the previous question… And to get more sleep!

Thank you Lisa, we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you better.
