The Hipwaders - Music Review + Giveaway!

Today on the decks we’re spinning a few tracks from the new album “The Golden State” by Californian kids band, The Hipwaders. These guys have a super hip retro surf sound that is instantly infectious and just plain fun. The album will be released on 2 August, 2011 but here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect!

The first song that grabbed my attention on this album is the impeccably cool “The Ramble”, a song that is impossible to listen to without breaking into your best 50s and 60s dance moves. Followed up by the indie stylings of “Hey Josie” with it’s beatle-esque harmonies, and then into the travel-dreams of Go Go Girl, this album is one fun track after the other.

Along the way, your find inspirational words wrapped up in upbeat feelgood anthems such as “Stand up to the Bully” and also some very useful advice such as “don’t get your hands near the bubble machine, it could lead to injuries or perhaps Gangrene”… from track 9, Bubble Machine PSA. However, the biggest grin for me came from track 12, So, You’re A Boy… “So you’re a boy, we know at first you’ll be unemployed. But it’s our job to care for you, and you’re tax deductible too…”

Songwriter for The Hipwaders, Tito Uquillas has been inspired and impressed by Aussie Rock since first hearing The Easybeats as a child. When he first started songwriting, he listened to a lot of Australian music including The Sports, Jo Jo Zep, Mental as Anything and The Saints. He continues to enjoy tracks from Paul Kelly, and The Hoodoo Gurus… Tito, you rock!
