Designer of the Week - Tied with a Ribbon

Hello! Can you believe it’s the last day of November!? Where does the time go? Today I’m chuffed to have a fabulously festive Designer of the Week feature, courtesy of the creative Jemima from Tied with a Ribbon. This week I had some fun trying out her DIY Gingerbread Man Felt Kit!

The Product Review

The Gingerbread Man Felt Kit is a DIY set that comes {in a pretty package} with everything that you need to create your very own Christmas decorations. I opened up my package to reveal a bunch of ginger coloured felt, chocolate coloured ribbon, black and red brads for eyes and rosy cheeks, and the star of the show, polka dot buttons! The kit makes three decorations, so I enlisted the help of my neighbour and her 10 year old daughter.

We found the instructions to be thorough and easy to follow, even for three novice craftspeople such as ourselves. My little creation ended up with slightly skewif eyes which made him look like he’d had one too many egg-nogs. He’s pure whimsy and will be taking pride of place on the Christmas tree this year. Incidentally, said 10 year old produced a picture perfect creation with not one stitch out of place.

Craft projects are one of the many wonderful traditions that I adore about Christmas. These kits are especially fun to make with older kids for the holiday season. The finished product can be hung on the tree, or could also used as a present topper.

The Verdict… Crafty, Creative and Fun!

The Indie Label

Jemima launched Tied with a Ribbon in May 2010. She chose her business name to reflect all the things that she loves and treasures about sewing and craft… “Since I was a young girl I’ve had a treasured ribbon collection. Whether they were for in my hair or to tie around presents, Ribbon has always caught my eye. I love the beautiful textures and designs. Most things I make always seem to incorporate ribbon into the design somewhere.  I loved that “Tied with a Ribbon” could also reflect the attention to detail I strive for – the finishing touch to something handmade to treasure.”

The Creative Mind

Jemima is mum to two daughters aged 7 and 8 years. She was inspired to create her DIY Felt Kits with the hope that they would inspire people of all ages to try their hand at sewing. The Gingerbread Man design was the first felt kit in the series, and the design was chosen for its universal appeal and easy-to-sew pattern. Jemima has a background in teaching, and loves to encourage people to try new things… “I wanted people to see that they could learn to sew without it being a daunting experience.  You don’t have to have a sewing machine to be able to sew, just by learning some simple hand sewing skills you can make your own creations.  This is especially true for children, who really seem to enjoy learning these sewing skills.”

The Whimsical Spirit

In her own words… “Three things about me… I love to bake, especially if chocolate is the main ingredient. Shopping is one of my favourite past times. I am lucky to have had a wonderful Nanna and Mum who inspired my love for all things sewing, creating and baking from a young age.”

The Handmade Collection

Tied with a Ribbon has a range of different DIY Kits for Christmas including Smiley Santas, Plum Puddings, Reindeer and Snowmen. You’ll also find a collection of pretty hair clip hangers, tooth fairy pillows and needlebooks available for purchase in her Etsy store.
