Music Review - Tumble Bee by Laura Veirs

I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off a lazy summer Sunday than with some music from acclaimed indie folk artist Laura Veirs. Laura’s first family album is called Tumble Bee and it features ballads from Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, Peggy Seeger and Harry Belafonte as well as some beautiful original tracks.

Tumble Bee by Laura Veirs

I just adore Laura’s laid-back vocal style, it makes this CD one that you can truly enjoy listening to whether it be on a roadtrip down a dusty highway, or sitting in a deck chair on the back verandah watching the kids playing in the yard. My personal favourites include the sublime ‘Prairie Lullaby’ for its enchanting melody and ‘All The Pretty Little Horses’. They’re both perfect songs to incorporate into a bedtime routine. Of course, ‘Jamaica Farewell’ is also irresistible when it comes a nostalgic sway, smile and hum.

On a more upbeat note, title track ‘Tumble Bee’ has a playful indie-pop beat. The Harry Belafonte classic ‘Jump Down Spin Around’ is just good plain fun; and track 5 ‘King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O’ is my top pick for family sing-a-longs.

Laura Veirs - Acclaimed Indie Music Artist

We’re so pleased that Laura decided to dip her toes into the world of children’s music and hope she’s caught the bug! This album features guest appearances by Colin Meloy {Decemberists}, Jim James {My Morning Jacket}, Béla Fleck and Brian Blade {drummer for Bob Dylan} among many others. It’s a modern day classic, that brings life back into songs of days gone by {that may otherwise have been long forgotten}.

You can listen to a couple of tracks from Tumble Bee on Laura Veirs facebook page, or purchase Tumble Bee at her website. You can even get it on vinyl!
