Designer of the Week - Ragdoll

Good morning friends! If you adore ikat fabric as much as I do, you’ll love today’s review. Please join me in welcoming our Designer of the Week, Alison from Ragdoll. Alison has just released her lovely winter collection, and at the top of our wishlist is her beautiful bell sleeved tunic.

Ragdoll Handmade Ikat Girls Tunic Dress

The Product Review

There’s certainly lots to love about this Ragdoll tunic, but first and foremost, I’m completely smitten with the choice of ikat fabrics. The hues are quite divine, with a selection of rich raspberry reds, or deep indigo hues of blues! The fabric is handmade by local artisans in Central Java (Indonesia) using traditional weaving looms. The raw material comes from cotton plants grown in their villages. Because of the time and skill involved in weaving ikat, some cultures believe the cloth is imbued with magical powers.

I also love the 70’s retro bell sleeves and cute pom pom detailing around the bib neckline. This is a mini boho style that Mums will wish they could wear with their favourite pair of flared jeans (perhaps I could squeeze into the size 10… ahem, hardly!)

The Verdict… Hip, Happy, and Harmonious!

The Indie Label

Alison launched her label Ragdoll in late 2011, but has been in love with design since studying fashion in the late 90s. She chose her business name in honour of the Aerosmith song ‘Ragdoll’, as she “love’s Steven Tyler’s colourful, bohemian, rock star style!” which shows in her eccentric creations.

Speaking of her design process, Alison says, “I design the pieces at home in Bondi and then take my patterns and samples to Bali where they are handmade in a small studio with lots of attention to detail. I collect vintage materials, anything from old band t-shirts to sheets, and take them to Bali to be used in the new designs along with any unique local fabrics that catch my eye. I fell in love with Bali when I first went there as a teenager in 1988 and the island itself has always been a huge source of inspiration for me.”

The Creative Mind

Alison is Mum of two girls, Lila, 8 and Emalee, 16. She is inspired by the spirit of the seventies, when… “kids set off on neighbourhood adventures from sun up to sun down. If we ripped a hole in our favourite pair of jeans climbing a tree or riding our battered BMX, our mum would patch it up and send us on our way”… I must say, that feels like a liner note right out of my own personal biography! Oh man, do I miss those days!

The Handmade Collection

The Ragdoll kid’s collection is designed in Bondi and handmade in Bali. This season you can expect to find a range of 70s inspired designs, including a super groovy unixex western shirt (pictured below) that is made from vintage sheets (dig it!). You can find the full collection online at Ragdoll, or visit Alison on Facebook for all the latest news.
