Designer of the Week - Arkadia

Hello folks! It’s a raining (or more precisely pouring) here in Brisbane, but despite the gloomy day, I’m here to spread some sunshine! Our Designer of the Week is new to the children’s fashion scene, but have already started to make a splash with the launch of their brand new store! Introducing Arkadia, and the super fun Drop Bears Onesie.

The Product Review

For this week’s review, I enlisted the services of 18mth old Angus who has recently discovered climbing. Sofas, chairs, curtains, bath tubs… no “mountain” is too high for this little guy! He gave the Arkadia onesie a workout, and the good news is that it has plenty of stretch and strong snap clips that don’t pop open under pressure. It also washed well and has so far kept its shape nicely.

The star of the show though, has to be the parachuting “Drop Bears”; a classic piece of Australian folklore that always gives me a giggle. I can’t even read the word without the voice of the late, great Steve Erwin popping into my head. For those of you who don’t reside in the “Sunburnt Country”, here’s a definition.

A drop bear is a fictitious Australian marsupial commonly said to be unusually large, vicious, carnivorous koalas (although the koala is not a bear) that inhabit treetops and attack their prey by dropping onto their heads from above. They are an example of local lore intended to frighten and confuse outsiders and amuse locals, similar to the jackalope, hoop snake, wild haggis or snipe hunt… {thank you Wikipedia}. HAHA!

The Verdict… Imaginative, Quirky and Playful

The Indie Label

Arkadia is the culmination of a dream for creators Ammber and Justin. They have been planning, developing and designing their label for the past 18 months, opening their clubhouse door on 13 July, 2012. Ammber has a background in fashion, music graphics and screen printing, and Justin’s a wiz with words and business development.

Ammber explains, “After working in a commercial fashion environment, I longed to produce completely original designs without the restrictions of adhering to trends or strict briefs.  This is why Arkadia’s philosophy is Go Against the Grain!

“The name Arkadia brings together two concepts that are very dear to us, being: Arcady; the ancient Greek province that was an idyllic vision of unspoiled wilderness, where people lived in harmony with nature and each other; and an old-school vintage games Arcade, an emporium of child like wonder and fun!”

The Creative Mind

Ammber and Justin have two children, Oscar 3 and Eveline 4 months. They draw inspiration from the joy of new discoveries, the wonderment of childhood, a longing for simpler times and the magic of nature.  Their first collection incorporates hand-drawn illustrations, photographic art, cartoons, retro style graphics, simple silhouettes, organic t-shirts, coloured marles and even one of their little boy’s paintings.

Ammber says, “As an only child I have always loved to draw and escape into my vivid imagination. You’ll see me constantly scribbling down ideas for prints in my diary, and then it’s a matter of bringing them to life once the kiddies are asleep. We like to centre each range on a theme.  The theme of our first range is “Taking Flight” to capture that childhood fascination with defying gravity and the belief that anything is possible!  It’s also a great metaphor for a label just starting out and trying to get off the ground.”

The Whimsical Spirit

  1. I am half Maori and have vivid dreams of things that often come true!

  2. Justin and I record music together in our own garage studio.  We’re our own biggest fans!

  3. I have designed tour t-shirts for the likes of Clare Bowditch, Lior, Ash Grunwald, Thirsty Merc, Mia Dyson and Lisa Mitchell.

The Handmade Collection

All Arkadia garments are made ethically and are built to endure the rigours of adventurous kids.  Designs are printed in small, limited edition runs onto quality cotton garments.  The current collection includes onesies for bubs and t-shirts for children aged 2 to 8. In the coming months, Arkadia hope to branch out into other garment shapes and handmade/upcycled treasures, so stay tuned! You can visit Arkadia via their website, or join them on Facebook for all the latest news.
