The Colored Pencil Factory by Astrograss

Hey folks, today’s new release children’s CD is from New York City’s premier bluegrass band for kids, Astrograss. It presents something a little bit different, with an American folksy sound and some sweet fiddlin’ and pickin’. The album was recorded without the use on amplifiers, drums, pedals, or ‘effects’. Astrograss’s Jordan Shapiro describes it as, “pure, organic, natural Americana”.

I must admit, bluegrass isn’t exactly my favourite style of music, but I do find that it works well with kids. For some reason every time I put it on around the little folk they start struttin’ around the place with big goofy grins on their faces and jovial springs in their steps.

I put this album in the CD player on a Saturday morning whilst enjoying a strong cup of coffee and a danish. As each track skipped by, I began to enjoy it more, and by the time track four rolled around, the classic “Shortenin’ Bread”, our back deck was a hive of toe-tapping, knee-slapping, hand-clapping and tickle-napping shenanigans.

THEN, when track number five, “Freak Out”, came on… all hell broke loose. We’ve decided to make it the unofficial theme song for the current state of our household.
