Designer of the Week - OBUBU

Hello there friends! Please allow me to introduce our Designer of the Week, Vina from newly launched organic children’s label OBUBU. Vina kindly sent us a little care package of sweetness this week including a lap t-shirt in red stripe, coordinating leggings, a couple of lovely organic wash cloths and a signature OBUBU bodysuit in natural stripe. Here’s our review!

The Product Review

Before I tell you about the lovely garments in this week’s review, I wanted to mention the wonderful service that I received from Vina whilst coordinating her feature. Her friendliness, work ethos, and the joy that she derives from OBUBU shines so brightly; from the way our care package was lovingly wrapped, to the passionate words she uses to describe her love for organics. Thank you Vina, for making this week’s review a truly pleasurable experience.

I engaged the assistance of a lucky little lad named Lachlan to test out the red stripe tee and coordinating leggings. First up, I loved how the beautiful bold colour in the tee contrasted so delicately with the natural striped pants. The design provides a cosy fit with easy on-and-off styling and the 100% certified organic cotton provides a delicate softness. This is a perfectly unisex outfit that would work well when transitioning from summer to autumn (and layered in winter).

The verdict… A versatile and cuddly wardrobe favourite.

For our review of the OBUBU bodysuit, I engaged the services of Tasmin Brown, a family and child photographer from Surry Hills, Sydney. Tasmin welcomed her little boy Charleston into the world just last week and has spoiled us with these gorgeous photos!

Take it away Tasmin…

After the birth of my son Charleston, we are all getting into a new routine and that includes reusing a lot of big sister Waverley’s hand-me-downs and dealing with the “mine” issues that plague the almost-twos. However, this new cream and brown stripe bodysuit is something that she cannot lay claim to, even though it’s soft shade would be fine for a boy or girl.

Charlie is wearing the 0-3 mths bodysuit as he is a big boy, born 4+ kg, and although I rolled up the sleeves, it fits him just fine and will continue to fit through that rapid growth phase over the next few months due to its stretchiness. He seems to be a spitty little guy and I was surprised that we could continue to take these pictures after such an incident as it didn’t show up at all and the fabric dried really quickly while he was still wearing it. It also kept its size well after a hot wash which was necessary after the poosplosion that followed later that day. It dried out on the line quickly and kept its softness.

Overall I appreciate that this well-made bodysuit can withstand the multiple washings that will be inevitably required and can still give me the peace of mind of organic fabric. OBUBU has a number of other great organic products and I have my eye on the fun summer red stripe wrap.

The verdict… soft and sweet!

The Indie Label

Vina launched her label OBUBU (o-boo-boo) earlier this year to showcase her passion for children’s clothing and organic fabrics. She explains, “My goal is to create beautiful apparel for babies and children that embrace all the wishes and dreams of new parents: soft, natural fabrics to surround our babies and to protect their delicate skin, designs that capture their colourful personalities, the highest quality construction, and comfortable design”.

The Creative Mind

Inspiration tends to strike Vina out of the blue, in everyday settings such as strolling through the park or taking in the magnificent surroundings so graciously provided to us by mother nature. She says, “Ideas come to me and I quickly sketch or put a note in my ‘my little red book’. It’s my ‘everything’ book from brainstorming to sketching. I like the designs to be simple and practical, clean yet elegant; something I would wear myself as an adult or in a ‘mini-me’ that you can mix-match, or layer for every season.”

Vina chose her business name OBUBU after visiting a large green tea plantation in Kyoto, Japan a couple of years ago. She sources her fabrics directly from India and Indonesia and each garment is handmade by Vina’s auntie in her small ‘sweat-shop free’ studio.

The Whimsical Spirit

Here’s three fun facts about Vina (in her own words)…

  1. I LOVE my sweets! (I can never say no to cupcakes/macarons/chocolates).
  2. I prefer products that are eco-friendly, a little bit quirky & not mass-produced.
  3. I believe that imagination is more important than knowledge.

The Handmade Collection

OBUBU creates a range of 100% certified organic cotton clothing for babies and children, made in generous sizing to provide timeless, durable pieces that will last through continual wash and wear.
