Designer of the Week - Leaf (and Giveaway)

Hello friends. This week I’m delighted to introduce you to Cath from eco-friendly stationery label, Leaf. I have also enlisted the help of Sydney Mum, Jodie, and her three fabulous daughters, Miss 5, 9 and 12. This terrific trio had a blast trying out some of the Leaf range, including the Story Starters, Journals, Add-a-Greeting Cards and Mini Sketchbooks.

The Product Review

Take it away Jodie…

The parcel from Leaf arrived wrapped in brown paper and bakers twine. We loved that. We are all Stationery hoarders in this house so there was a lot of excitement at receiving something new to inspire our creativity.

My 12 year old was the first to use the Add-a-Greeting Cards. Making a card for her youngest sisters upcoming birthday kept her busy for half an hour. She loved that there were thought bubble stickers to add because they were not too young for her.

My 9 year old got her hands on the Girl Talk Journal. She instantly opened it and wrote her name in it and began filling in the pages. She particularly liked the ‘Talent Checklist’.

My 5 year old chose the Mini Sketch Book and happily drew pictures and wrote words (she’s just started Kindy) while her big sisters were busy with their projects.

We all equally enjoyed the Story Starters. It can be hard getting answers from all three girls at the end of each day as they are tired or hungry or busy with activities and homework. It was such a pleasure to see them open up and be excited to share their stories with the simple prompts that are in the ‘Story Starter’ box. It was also a great opportunity to have them stop and LISTEN to each other.

Above all else I sincerely appreciate that Leaf products are carbon neutral and handmade in Australia.

The verdict… engaging, creative and tons of fun!

The Indie Label

The original concept for “Leaf” was developed by Cath Connell four days before receiving a redundancy from her corporate marketing job at a major paper wholesaler. She explains…

“It was like having my dream handed to me on a silver platter! Leaf has evolved quite a bit since then, especially as I had originally intended to create journals and stationery for adults. But a few serendipitous opportunities led to me develop products mostly for kids.

Through Leaf, I have discovered a real passion for encouraging kids to develop good journal keeping and story telling practises while they are young. I believe it’s incredibly important for a whole host of reasons – to encourage them to explore, create and dream; to build their personal resilience, develop literacy skills and get them away from technology for a little while!

I get a real buzz from hearing our tech-savvy kids talk about the Story Starters and Journals with such enthusiasm. It’s like they’ve discovered something new!”

The Creative Mind

Cath has a background in graphic design, but prefers to outsource most of her design work for Leaf. She enjoys the freedom to incorporate various design styles into her collections, and is able to easily adapt the artwork into a variety of mediums including greeting cards and notebooks to round out the range.

Cath is mum to one little guy who is 6 years old. She is constantly gathering images, information and ideas, and reads widely on a variety of topics from science and technology to psychology and self-development. Cath explains, “These “adult” concepts are then translated into products, at a level that children can understand, and that they will find fun and engaging.”

The Whimsical Spirit

Here’s three fun facts about Cath (in her own words):

  1. My all-time favourite activity is curling up on the couch with a good book.

  2. I have visited every continent – yes, including Antarctica!

  3. I love my garden, but am not having much luck on the vegetable front yet – definitely not a real dirtgirl. ☹

Limited Edition

All Leaf products are printed locally on 100% recycled or forest certified papers, using eco-friendly printing techniques (digital and offset). Most Leaf products are hand assembled, either by Cath or as a fun, working group of friends.

Cath explains, “I’m really trying to push the boundaries of what “recycled” products can look like – so our first collection uses super-bright colours and funky graphics, with crisp white text pages. No “brown and grungy” here!”
