Designer of the Week - The Bushel Box Co.

Happy Wednesday! I have the pleasure today of reviewing something a little bit different for our Designer of the Week. The Bushel Box Co. is a creative project of Claire Davey, and the superbly playful creation that you see below is a handmade vintage-styled wooden storage crate, personalised with our choice of whimsical slogan!

The Product Review

I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that I love a healthy heaping of whimsy in my life; and when it comes in a vintage-meets-modern handmade product, I’m all the more inspired.

The “Big Box of Awesomeness” by The Bushel Box Co. is handmade from rough sawn pine that comes from sustainably managed plantation forests. Each box is made to order, and is hand-painted in a colour of your choice, with the option to add some personalised stencil text. I chose this slogan as I feel that it perfectly represents my ever-growing collection of trinkets, toys and collectibles.

I opted for the raw pine with muted red print, as I’m fond of the natural look. This crate is perfect for a children’s toy box, however, you could also use it for wine storage, recycling, garden planters, or market displays. The construction is super sturdy, and has a charming and rustic handcrafted appeal.

You can check the full range of boxes, crates and trays at The Bushel Box Co.

The verdict… Vintage charm for the modern lifestyle

The Indie Label

Claire launched The Bushel Box Co. in November 2012 after returning to Australia from a 2 year trip back to England (where she was born). She explains, “I’d been buying a lot of vintage furniture and developed a bit of a vintage crate crush. They are fabulous for storing the kids toys and other bits and pieces. At the same time I was also painting some vintage furniture for my home – and somehow the two things came together.”

The Bushel Box Co. hopes to capture the design sensibility of mums who would like a little bit less plastic in their lives. Claire says, “…with two daughters and a vast amount of plastic tea sets, play food, plastic animals etc., I wanted something to store them in that I was happy to have in my home.”

The Creative Mind

Claire is a mum of two little girls named Daisy (3.5) and Annabel (2). She chose the name The Bushel Box Co. to reflect the original name given to this style of apple crate.

The Bushel Box Co. brings together three of Claire’s favourite design elements: vintage furniture, the industrial look, and a rustic style. She looks to these three elements for colour inspiration – via magazines, online browsing and hitting some key shops. She is also influenced by the needs of her customers, with styles and sizes evolving to fit their needs. In the next year she hopes to add a smaller and larger crate to the collection.

The Whimsical Spirit

Here’s three fun facts about Claire (in her own words):

  1. I’m a magazine journalist by trade and have worked for Grazia UK and was last on staff at Instyle Australia as features Editor.

  2. I met my Australian husband on holiday in New Zealand and after a year of long distance dating he convinced me to move to Australia.

  3. My next passion will be stand up paddle boarding, it looks amazing but between managing two small kids and starting a business I have still yet to put a toe in the water!
