Designer of the Week - Audrey Elizabeth

I love the opportunity to meet new designers and the lovely Lisa from Audrey Elizabeth caught my eye earlier this month with her striking collection of handmade dresses for little ladies. Today I have the pleasure of reviewing her newest creation, the Elsie dress in Red Savannah. This dress is even more striking in person than it is on the screen. The colours are Vibrant with a capital V.

The Product Review

The Audrey Elizabeth ‘Elsie’ dress is made from 100% cotton quilting fabric and is perfect for Autumn, in shades of berry and lime.  The fabric is called Red Savanna (a stone hill collection by Donna Wilder for Fabric Traditions). The design features 3 Snap clips on the back for easy wearing and a coordinating satin ribbon sash for a charming finish.

There’s much to love about this delightful creation, but for me, it’s all about the colour! The workmanship is also superb, with professional finishing and sweet polka dot lining. I also adore the delicate pleating on the front, which gives this dress a lovely drape.

The verdict… A precious addition to a little ladies wardrobe.

The Indie Label

Lisa launched her label Audrey Elizabeth in January 2012 about 6 months after her daughter was born. Nearing the end of her maternity leave, Lisa set out to find a work at home option, rather than returning to her job as a childcare professional. She started out making hair accessories, but decided to try her hand at sewing after a prompt from from a friend (who is also a professional doll maker).

Lisa explains, “I didn’t own a sewing machine but my friend surprised me one as a late birthday present! I started out with a basic A-Line dress pattern and worked my way up from there. I’m a fully fledged self taught sewer! I am still learning new skills and tricks everyday. Audrey Elizabeth is currently still classified as my hobby, but I have hopes of one day opening a little boutique and sharing my handmade with everyone.

The Creative Mind

Lisa named her business after her daughter, who she describes as “my inspiration and my little ray of pink in a house full of trucks, trains, cars and planes”. Lisa also has a 6-year-old son named Patrick who has just started primary school.

I asked Lisa to tell us a bit more about her design process, and she replied, “I like to choose prints and styles that suit the season and are different from what everyone else is doing. I like pieces that are versatile and many of my designs can be worn all year round. I also keep in mind “what would Audrey wear?” I would never design anything that I wouldn’t dress my own children in”.

“When beginning a new project, it usually begins with the fabric. I let the fabric guide me in the direction of what to make. Once I have picked a fabric I look at all my patterns, and pick a few that I can take inspiration from to make something new. I then set out to create! It doesn’t always work out the way I see it in my head but more often than not I come up with a winner”.

Thanks Lisa!

The Whimsical Spirit

Here’s three fun facts about Lisa (in her own words):

  1. I’m addicted to fabric!! Even if I don’t need it, if I find a pretty one, I have to have it!

  2. I LOVE scarves!! I have 37 and counting!!!

  3. I adore the style and grace of the 1920’s fashion and decor!
