Designer of the Week - Mômes

Are you in the mood for moustaches, monocles, bow ties, kerchiefs, and top hats? Today I’ve assembled an awesome selection of quirky tees from newly launched children’s label Mômes. A creative project of Sydney-based design duo Chloe and Michael, Mômes creates cool organic cotton tees for boys. You can read our review below, or snap up a tee of your very own via the Mômes Etsy store.

The Product Review

I first met Chloe & Michael from Mômes when I stumbled upon their brand new Etsy store… and promptly developed a style crush on their dapper designs. My favourites include the cheerfully rotund babushka boy with the curly orange mo; the pirate with the eye patch and Yosemite Sam style crumb catcher; and the urban cowboy sporting a Stetson and a pair of Aviators. Also in store you’ll find moustachioed pandas, charming gentleman, dashing diplomats, and happenin’ hipsters! These guys really know how to translate their quirky imaginations into print…

I tried out a couple of Mômes t-shirts on Mr One and Mr Four and was very impressed with both the cut of the tee (not too boxy) and the quality of the fabric. The 100% certified organic cotton makes for a super soft and ultra comfortable feel against the skin, and the construction is top notch. The graphics are printed in vibrant vinyl, which really pops against the natural and navy backgrounds. In addition, the price point is very reasonable for an organic designer tee, at just $25AUD (or $20 with free shipping if you buy before 31 January, 2014 – see website for code and details).

The verdict… Quirky with a capital Q!

The Indie Label

Mômes (which translates to “Little Dudes” in French) came to life in December 2013 with the aim of making high quality, stylish, and affordable clothing for boys. Chloe explains, “We wanted to dress our two little dudes in funky, cool and unique clothing without having to compromise on quality, fashion, and above all, without breaking the bank”.

Chloe and Michael chose the name Mômes to honour their two boys (17 months and 3 years old) and also Chloe’s heritage (she was born and raised in France). Chloe says, “We are inspired by the French culture, different moustache designs, our two little boys, and also other sources such as games that we played during our childhood, as seen in our Tic-Tac-Toe design”.

The Creative Mind

The Mômes collection is made from organic cotton, which was a conscious design choice based on Chloe and Michael’s respect for the environment and consideration for children’s sensitive skin.

All of the Mômes tees are designed and printed in house, and since they are made to order you can even request a few custom colour changes. Chloe says, “We are aiming for designs that are unique and different from what is on the market, and we take pride in our involvement with every step of the production process”.

The Whimsical Spirit

Here’s three fun facts about the Mômes crew (as told by Chloe):

  1. I was born and raised in France and people are often surprise that I am actually French and often stare when I talk to my friends and family in Sydney.

  2. Both my toddlers understand French and Michael is picking up a lot of words which makes it difficult because now he understands when I talk about him!

  3. Michael is a motorcycle enthusiast and loves riding and modifying his bikes. As for myself; I am passionate about shopping and finding great products for the boys and myself.
