Earlier this month I had the pleasure of meeting Abbie, the very talented creative mind behind handmade label Maisie Jayne. Abbie creates a stylish and modern collection of clothing for kids and this week we have the honour of road testing a pair of organic ‘Rain Dance’ leggings with a matching infinity scarf. Abbie is also treating us to a giveaway, read on!
I must say, I was seriously excited when this gorgeous Rain Dance combo arrived in my mailbox. The set is from the new organic collection by Maisie Jayne is just so much fun! I engaged the services of local mum (and resident photographer) Tasmin Brown for this review… here’s what she had to say:
These cute little pants from Maise Jayne will fit in well for us as tights under skirts or as standalone pants because of the little knee patches. This pattern is modern and colourful but gender neutral, so both of my kids will end up wearing them. The fabric is a very soft, thick, stretchy cotton that is going to hold up, not losing shape over time and getting holey like every other pair of leggings my daughter seems to have.
The seat of the pants is sewn generously to allow for nappies I assume, but the shape appears more harem pant style on my daughter in undies, in a cute way (not overly baggy), and they still stay up around the waist. I’m always looking for versatility, and I can tell when she outgrows the length, they will still look cute as ¾ length as the knee patch is big enough that it won’t matter. The scarf is cute too, and simple enough for my daughter to put on and off herself. Like her treasure trove of dress up necklaces, this piece may get more wear with her eclectic fashion sense.
The verdict… stylish, versatile and super comfy!
Abbie launched her handmade label shortly after the birth of her daughter (and design inspiration) Maisie Jayne. At the time, Abbie was working as a software engineer at a large firm but wasn’t feeling satisfied with her career.
Abbie explains, “Once Maisie arrived, I couldn’t imagine going back to work, but knew I would I go stir crazy if I didn’t have an outlet for my creative energy. Though I’ve been a hobby sewer since I was a teen and got my hands on my mom’s sewing machine (which I still have), I had never seriously considered selling my creations. Maisie’s arrival was the kick in the butt to finally pursue a path that I feel passionate about. I could not be happier about my choice”.
Abbie works primarily with knits, which are super comfy for kids as well as versatile and fun. She seeks out bright, whimsical prints and is inspired by playtime, imagination and “the pure exuberance that kids embrace wholeheartedly” – which truly shows in her collection.
As well as being a busy parent to 15 month old Maisie Jayne, Abbie also has two step kids aged 12 and 15 years. She says, “I am finding that teens and toddlers have a lot in common”… ain’t that the truth!
Here’s four fun facts about Abbie, in her own words:
In my spare time (haha) I do Kung Fu; Im currently a green sash working on testing for my blue sash.
I am a super duper cat lover; I will never not have a cat in my life!
I love playing Mario Bros though have very little time for that.
I always make sure I take at least one dance class a week. Dance is my other true passion. I didn’t discover dance until I was an adult but I have been hooked ever since. Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern…. I’ll do it all!
