Designer of the Week - Red Hand Gang + Giveaway

I truly cherish the opportunity to bring you reviews of playful handmade products that are filled with imagination, style, and whimsy. Our designer of the week, Abi from Red Hand Gang, hails from Oxford, UK and creates a range of children’s decor for modern living spaces. Today we review two Red Hand Gang wooden clothes hangers, and give you the chance to win one (boy or girl).

The Product Review

Red Hand Gang wooden clothes hangers bring together two of my favourite features for children’s products; function and fashion! Laser cut from birch plywood, they make a lovely alternative to your average plastic or wire variety hanger. The facial features and hair are painted and varnished by hand which results in a modern and playful end product. The little curves in the hanger ‘arms’ keep your items in place when hung, and these hangers are so cute that they are perfectly at home on a bedroom wall, displaying a favourite dress, or holding bunch of accessories… winter scarves perhaps?

The verdict… perfectly practical, and fabulously fun!

The Indie Label

Red Hand Gang came to life in 2012 with a collection of children’s books inspired by Abi’s daughter, Harper. Abi explains, “My daughter is quite a prolific artist, she can get through a sketch book pretty quickly, so when she was about three I started making her her own personalised drawing books. They are a great record of what she was drawing and when. I guess this is where the idea of Red Hand Gang was born. I started to make books for friend’s kids birthdays and through that people started buying them as gifts for other kids. It was then that I decided to open a shop; and in 2012 Red Hand Gang opened its doors on Etsy”.

Abi chose the name “Red Hand Gang” in honour of her favourite show as a child. She says, “It was about a little gang of American kids running around with no parental supervision solving crimes, skateboarding and generally having fun and looking cool… fun, cool and a maybe little bit 1970s is the look I go for when I design my stuff; the name of the shop had to be Red Hand Gang!”

The Creative Mind

Abi is mum to 5 year old Harper (who loves art, all things pink, and dressing up) and 3 year old Sylvie (who loves jumping, scooting, and changing her shoes 8 times a day)! Alongside her daughters, Abi is inspired by bold, unfussy, colourful design. She explains, “The perfect combinations for me are a lovely Dutch grey linen with a pop of neon pink and bright red, or the beauty of smooth blonde ply painted with a bright block of colour. I like colours that clash and jar a bit. Bright orange and pink is always a winner for me”.

As well as being inspired by her daughters, Abi enjoys the beauty and simplicity of the scandi aesthetic (a big influence in the design of the hangers), 1970s toys, 1950s illustration, browsing pinterest, and standing in her local art shop in the acrylic paint section checking out the colours. She also adores Japanese design; in particular, the toy makers Buchi, sculptor Yoshimasa Tsuchiya, and artist Yoshitomo Nara to name but a few.

The Whimsical Spirit

Here’s three fun facts about Abi, in her own words:

  1. I am very good at eating cakes but terrible at making them.

  2. I love a bit of cycling around Oxford when I get a chance.

  3. Photography is another passion!
