Julie’s review

For anyone looking to diversify their car related music options, the album “1 2 3 con Andrés” (produced by Andrés Salguero and Luis Angel Bonilla) is a great choice. It’s live, boppy and friendly but can also be soulful and at times quite relaxing. The appeal of this album lies in its “world music” like sound; track number 6 “If I Had a Mariachi” is a perfect example!

The main singer & songwriter, Andrés Salguero, originates from Colombia and has an extensive history in Latin-American music but wanted to deliver an album dedicated to families and having a bilingual purpose.

I have always been a closet language lover (I appreciate others’ talents in the area!) and this kind of CD allowed me to indulge in a fantasy that I could again attempt to learn a new language. The writer/ singer draws parallels between English and Spanish seamlessly and one could be forgiven for thinking language is easy to learn at an older age. And for younger kids, with their spritely minds, this is a wonderful time to expose them to new cultures and languages.

This is a mostly educational album (such as track 7, “My Friend Manuel”) but that is expertly hidden by the live music, with a diverse range of instruments including the guitar and trumpets. I particularly liked the songs which pointed out the meanings of words in both English and Spanish; many youngins will love working out the meaning of the words between languages and, if they have a background in Italian, there are obvious similarities there too which are fun to find.

Slightly older kids will love track track 8, which is a true “Love Song” for our furred and feathered friends. It’s quirky and, personally, I love a good guitar / bongo combo 🙂

All in all, this album offers music with an abundance of relevant themes for the savvy 3.5-7 year olds and there are tracks about fatherhood, culture and language tips to suit an older audience. And can I mention again track no 8 about a higher love for animals? A big hit with me and a certain five year old!
