Designer of the Week - Cheeky Chickadee

Today’s cheerful winter style comes to you from Connie at Cheeky Chickadee in Sydney. Connie creates a whimsical range of children’s clothing in smile-worthy prints including penguins, flamingos, whales and rabbits. This week we’re road testing a pair of penguin pants! We’ve also recruited local mum Tina to try out the skull and crosses moccasins and bib set.

The Product Review

Cheeky Chickadee Penguin Pants

I’ve gone a bit gaga for harem pants this winter, and I’m just loving all the cute fabrics out there at the moment. This sweet little pair is made from 100% certified organic cotton, which is incredibly soft. I love the laid back silhouette, which has a easy fit crotch and a slim leg for a super stylin’ look. The penguin pattern is modern and funky in black and white against a background of sky blue, with little pops of yellow. This is a well made piece at a very affordable price point of $22.

The verdict… sweet, sustainable, and stylish.

Cheeky Chickadee Baby Moccs and Dribble Bib

We had fun trying out this cute set with our little man, the monster dribbler! Initially I was skeptical about skulls on a baby item, but I matched these accessories with a bright outfit and was really happy with the finished look. The black suede on the bottom of the shoes was grippy on our polished wooden floors, and I like how both items are lined with organic fleece. I’m recently converted to the idea of a dribble bib, partly for mopping up dribbles, but mainly because the bandana styling is the baby version of a accent scarf!

The verdict… perfect for precious little pirates.

The Indie Label

Connie launched her business¬†Cheeky Chickadee after the birth of her daughter, Arya. She says, “After working for years in the fashion industry, I wanted to combine my love of fashion with my love of colour and creating unique prints that are fun and bright. The label is very new, launching my first prints only 5 weeks ago, but I have loved every minute of working on it”.

Connie chose her business name to honour her daughter, who she lovingly refers to as her “cheeky chicken”.

The Creative Mind

Connie works exclusively with organic cotton due to its benefits to both the environment and to sensitive baby skin. This season’s Cheeky Chickadee prints celebrate animals and feature colours that are eye-catching, playful, and vibrant.

Connie explains, “The styles for our winter collection are very simple so that the prints become more of a focus. I have designed penguins, whales and flamingos all in colours that are unisex and able to be worn by any baby. I love that I am able to design, create and make every piece of clothing in my small studio in Enmore, Sydney”.

The Whimsical Spirit

Three fun facts about Connie (in her own words):

  1. I am somewhat fabric obsessed and any bright pattern or bold colour gets me hooked.

  2. I love drawing and sketching.

  3. I love trying my hand at baking… even though my baking skills are a work-in-progress!
