It’s designer of the week time and we’re making our way down to chilly Melbourne to meet the creative mind behind children’s accessories label, Lil Hipstar. Chief designer, Laura, creates a selection of modern baby bibs, teethers, toys, pillows, blankets and artwork, and has a lovely collection of bright prints and monochromes in store this season. Read on for our review, and a fun giveaway!
For our review this week, we tried out the Ready Set Go Bandana Bib and Teether Set which is made from 100% cotton with a soft flannel backing. The teething ring is made from 100% organic maple wood with an olive oil finish (treated so it won’t splinter or crack).
This is a well made set featuring an on trend monochrome design that pairs well with block colours for stylish accessorising. The soft flannel backing makes for a lovely calming sensory tool for tactile babies, and you can throw the fabric in the wash for easy cleaning.
The verdict… modern styling, perfect for gift giving.
Laura launched her label Lil Hipstar in September 2013 as a creative outlet to pursue while caring for her little guy, Oliver. She explains, “When Oliver was born I just couldn’t find the funky, hip baby blanket that I was looking for. I wanted something a little different. Before having my son Oliver, I was a full time architect. When Oliver was born with a congenial skull condition called craniosynostosis, I knew that returning to the corporate work would probably not be possible. This was a turning point and a great opportunity to have the best of both worlds: caring for Oliver, and designing and creating fun exciting things for other babies that just weren’t available for us!”
Laura hopes that someday, Lil HipStar will be financially stable enough to donate 50% of all proceeds to The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne (cranio-facial clinic). She says, “This is very important to us since the clinic, hospital and staff.
Laura chose her business name after considering lists and lists of names, and discussing them with neighbours, friends and family. She settled on Lil Hipstar to portray the spirit of Melbourne, the funky little generation of kids, and the cool, modern and hip styling of the kids décor in her store.
Laura lists her creative inspiration as “a constant passion for wanting to make, create and design”. She says, “For me, designing and making things has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. The next step in Lil HipStar’s life is to start designing and printing our all of our own fabric designs. I think this will add an extra special touch to our product range.”
Laura works with all kinds of fabrics, and enjoys “shopping for it, buying it, and sewing it” - she especially adores texture such as the black velvety minky cuddle and jersey knit and explains, “My favourite colours and style combinations at the moment are geometric black and white. I love the simplicity of monochrome and the gender neutrality”.
Here’s a few fun facts about Laura, in her own words:
I water ski (8 yrs old) and snow ski (3 yrs old)
I love to watch horror movies
I grew up in rural Nebraska USA
My other passion is baking! Chocolate chip cookies anyone?
