Behind the Scenes with Me and Tex!

Happy Friday! It’s my absolute pleasure today to share a behind the scenes sneaky peek into the creative mind of Judith from Australian handmade label, Me and Tex. Judith creates quirky toys, iPhone covers, knitted accessories, and upcycled knitwear. The mad menagerie that you see below are some of our personal favourites from Judith’s range.

Me and Tex Handmade Toys, Softies

Me and Tex was…
Born in late 2008, when I opened my Etsy shop selling hand knit accessories. Over time it has evolved and I now make textile toys using mostly salvaged and vintage materials. I love knitting and I combine hand and sewing techniques as well as knitting in my softie construction. I also sell my work through galleries and occasionally at markets.

I started my creative life as a…
Painter, having completed a Bachelor of Fine Art 15 years ago. A few years ago I learnt how to sew through a TAFE Outreach course and started my journey towards softie making.

When I look around my workspace I see…
Fabric and yarn…everywhere! I also see my old 1970’s vintage sewing   machine, and lots of sunlight streaming in through the window.

My design style is influenced by…
Nature, animals, children’s books with especially painterly illustrations and many talented softie and textile designers.

My favourite materials to work with are…
Natural fabrics, especially linen. I LOVE linen!

The first handmade product I made for my store was…
A pink hand knit beanie.

The motto I live by is…
Don’t give up, just keep going!

If I could go back and give my teenage self one piece of advice, it would be…
Trust and believe in yourself.

Three things that make me smile each day are…
My lovely cat, Tex, my creativity and the multitude of amazing creative talent I can access via my computer.

My favourite book is…
Herman Hesse “Siddhartha”.
