Designer of the Week - Cream Empire

Choosing a bedding set for your little poppet’s room, especially the set that you use on their very first night in their cot, is a fun, and special experience. This week I’d like to introduce you to Carolina from Cream Empire. Carolina makes modern bedding for bubs and today we’re reviewing her fitted cot sheets.

The Product Review

The Cream Empire fitted cot sheets are made from high quality 100% cotton, to fit a standard cot mattress. You can choose from heaps of fabrics (as pictured here) in a range of monochromes or modern hues. We’re especially smitten with the mint clouds and the black and white moustaches. Carolina also makes flat sheets and duvet/quilt covers and will soon be releasing a range of single and double bed linen.

I love the fact that the handmade world has branched out into bed linen. I’ve always liked to use bedding as a statement piece / splash of colour for a bedroom and the Cream Empire range is perfect for that purpose. Carolina accepts custom orders, so you can mix-and-match fabrics to achieve the perfect look.

The verdict… modern, stylish decor for kids.

The Indie Label

Carolina launched her label Cream Empire in December 2013 after hunting for some unique bed linen for her son Javier’s cot. She didn’t have much luck finding anything she liked at an affordable price, and thought she’d try her hand at making a set. She explains, “I soon began making them for friends and family and that’s when my husband suggested that I start a little online shop via Etsy.”

“From Dec to June I was making cot sheets from fabric suppliers. This made it difficult as I sometimes couldn’t find fabrics that I really liked or fabrics that were in trend. This inspired me to start designing my own fabrics and printing them. In July 2014, I launched my custom fabric, had a shop revamp, closed my Etsy shop, and opened on BigCartel. It was the best thing I have ever done, as now, I can design and make exactly I want!”

The Creative Mind

Carolina works with exclusively with high quality 100% cotton fabrics. She draws her inspiration from her 18 month old toddler, and says, “I see what a quick learner he is, and think, what do I want to teach him? I try to make most of my designs based on educational things that can help kids and babies develop”.

“I have recently launched a range of cushions called ‘the alphabet series’ which are just like flash cards on cushions, using popular trends such as superheroes to help kids learn while they decorate their rooms. My creations are also inspired by my childhood. I used to be a very active child and loved playing outdoor games. I have tried to incorporate this in my designs”.

The Whimsical Spirit

Here’s three fun facts about Carolina (in her own words):

  1. I am a scientist as well as Cream Empire owner.

  2. I am a creator at heart. I love art. I love drawing, painting and designing. I find doing this very relaxing.

  3. I speak two languages, Spanish and English (of course), and would love to learn French. I am trying to teach my little man Spanish.
