Designer of the Week - Lille Ven

I’m so delighted to have the opportunity to share these gorgeous creations from Lille Ven just before Christmas, as these shirts would make a lovely Christmas Day outfit for your little guy. Lille Ven is the brainchild of Sophie from Melbourne, and I think you’ll agree that her style is all kinds of charming.

The Product Review

In review today we have the Lille Ven Elephants Never Forget Shirt in pale blue and white gingham. This shirt is made from lightweight 100% cotton, so it’s cool in summer. My favourite features include the elephant trim around the collar and button placket (a little pop of whimsy) and the subtle, yet super fun, contrasting stitching on the buttons (in pleasantly unexpected neon orange).

The Lille Ven range is impeccably handmade, using high quality fabrics and professional finishing. Sophie makes her shirts in line with the Australian Standard Size Coding Scheme for Infants’ and Children’s Clothing, in sizes to fit kids from 12 months – 5 years. These shirts are made to last, with a generous fit that allows room to grow. You could style this tee with a pair of cargo shorts for Christmas Day, or a pair of jeans for night out on the town (New Years Eve fireworks anyone)?

The verdict… Handmade excellence from stitching to styling!

The Indie Label

The concept for Lille Ven grew from designer Sophie’s love for Scandinavian fashion, in particular the simple designs coupled with subtle highlights, which she discovered while living in Europe with her two little boys. She explains, “Upon my return to Australia, and inspired by my time overseas, I began work on my own range of clothing, striving to bring a bit of this effortless style & flair to Australian kids. And so the concept for Lille Ven was born, leading to our launch in 2014 with our summer collection”.

The Creative Mind

The name Lille Ven means ‘Little Friend’ in Danish. It is a term of endearment used by parents addressing their small children. Sophie says, “Given my love of all things Scandinavian, together with a little Nordic blood in my veins, I felt this name was a perfect fit for the business”.

Sophie likes to work with simple but bold designs, with bright highlights. She always chooses 100% cotton fabrics, as she believes that natural fibres are essential for comfort and breathability. When it comes to designing her label, Sophie draws inspiration from “photography, art, design, colour, the beautiful outdoors, and the simple happiness that children bring to the world”. She says, “I also draw a lot of inspiration from my two boys (aged 2 and 4) who are my love, my inspiration, and my little helpers”.

The Whimsical Spirit

Here’s three fun facts about Sophie, in her own words:

  1. I once climbed Mt Kinabalu in Malaysia –  watching the sunrise from the summit was well worth climbing in darkness & my aching limbs.

  2. I’m slowly becoming an expert at building Lego & making cubbies!

  3. This business has been a significant learning experience for me, though the best part is being my own boss!

The Handmade Collection

The Lille Ven collection is handmade in Melbourne and each piece is that little bit unique. Sophie aims to create garments that stand out from the crowd. There’s no mass produced products in this mix folks! You can check out the full range online at Lille Ven, or follow Sophie on Facebook or Instagram for all the latest news.
