Today I’d like to add a little bit of sunshine and happiness to your life with a new product range from our friend Kylie Loy from Tiges and Weince. Kylie has just released a series of modern pennants for kids; and today we’re road testing the Play Sing Create Dream design. These pennants are available in heaps of styles, including personalised options as well.
There’s lots to love about this pennant by Tiges and Weince. First and foremost, it captures the essence of childhood in four simple words; play, sing, create, and dream. These are wonderful words to live by, not only for the little folk, but for their mums and dads too.
Tiges and Weince pennants measure 37cm long x 30cm wide. They’re printed onto lightweight cotton and hung with a piece of wooden dowel and natural twine. The colours are cheerful, modern, and gender neutral, and the pattern has just the right amount of whimsy.
The verdict… A little ray of sunshine for your living space!
Tiges and Weince designer, Kylie Loy, worked in the fashion industry for 13 years designing women’s and children’s wear before leaving to have kids. She explains, “With all of the knowledge I gained over the years from design, pattern making, manufacturing, and putting together collections, I wanted to create my own”.
Kylie casually started designing a range of accessories in 2008/09, and after her second child was born in 2010 she started to get a lot more serious. Kylie says, “My business started off making bibs, nappy satchels, and iron-on patches. I was also printing personalised art to be hung in nurseries & kids rooms”.
“Business was a bit slow until I started putting the same designs I created on paper onto fabric to make cushions, bunting, and doorstops. My business got incredibly busy from just changing the medium I was working with. In 2014 I finally invested in a DTG (direct to garment) printer & the rest is history. I am making more products now than I ever thought would be possible. I feel so lucky & couldn’t imagine creating or doing anything else. My goal is to make children’s bedrooms a personal, bright & happy place”.
Kylie is a mum of two (Hudson, 6, and Charlotte, 4). She runs her main business under own her name, Kylie Loy, but you might know her best by children’s label, Tiges and Weince; a name she chose to honour nicknames from her childhood. She says, “Dad, for as long as I can remember, calls me Tiges, (pronounced like tiger but minus the r). Mum calls me Weince (weence) as she thought I was so teeny tiny as a baby”.
Kylie works mainly with cottons, due to its suitability as a durable and breathable textile for kids. She draws much of her inspiration from colour, explaining, “I love colour, bright & bold. Books inspire me, plus design & interior blogs, and I have a selection of favourite artists that I follow, and their processes and journey inspire me incredibly. Successful artists inspire me to push myself. I adore patterns, ones that are intricate & detailed, and lastly the theatre and music inspire me. I adore a brilliant song and dance, especially when there are amazing costumes & props involved”.
Here’s a couple of fun facts about Kylie (in her own words):
I actually wanted to be a sports psychologist before being a fashion designer. I have loved sport all my life and studied science, maths, and psychology in VCE. I went to uni for a year and realised it wasn’t for me. I then discovered my love for sewing & drawing. The rest is now history and I went on and studied fashion design for 3 years.
I love a chat and have also been known to talk under water! Haha!
Kylie Loy creates interior decor items, primarily for kids, including personalised cushions, birth cushions, pennants, doorstops, tooth fairy bags, heat bags & wall art. Her designs are contemporary, classic, and of course bright! Kylie loves details within designs, and says “I could never be looked at being minimalist. I use current trends as inspiration but always try to add my ‘twist’ to them”.
