I’m a little bit smitten today with this recently released collection of handmade loveliness from the folks at Lulu & Milly. This season is all about polka dots, hearts, stripes, flowers, and bows; in bold hues of black and gold, with sprinkles of glitter and few lovely pastels too. For today’s review, we’ve enlisted the assistance of Victorian mum Kristy and her beautiful daughter Charlotte.
In review today we have the Lulu & Milly Organic Black Roses collection, which is available in skirts, leggings, and headbands. We tested out the skirt and headband, which we found to be impeccably crafted and a lovely fit. The fabric is a super soft high quality organic cotton and the drape of the skirt is beautiful (easily fitting over a nappy, and very comfortable around the waistband).
The star of the show would have to the be patterns in the current Lulu & Milly range. Creative minds behind the label, Jasmine and Amanda, certainly have an eye for style, and with so many mix and match pieces in their collection, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to styling your little lass this Autumn.
The verdict… chic, modern, and absolutely charming!
*Special thanks to little Charlotte for modelling her Lulu & Milly outfit
Lulu and Milly came to life in September 2013. Design duo Jasmine and Amanda had given birth to their second children earlier in the year, both girls, and had been inspired to create some headbands. They explain, “We thought we could start selling them, and tested the water on Facebook. By the following January we had set up our website and never looked back”.
“Our business was named after our newest baby girls, Luella (Lulu) and Amelia (Milly). Our logo was designed by Jasmine’s husband Steve who owns his own graphic design business, Blue Penguin Designs. Our direction just took shape over time, we both have similar tastes so in most cases it has been easy to choose our fabrics and designs”.
Jasmine and Amanda both love to create and are always searching for new colours, designs and styles. They are both mums of two; Amanda has a boy aged 3 and a girl aged 1, and Jasmine currently has 2 girls, a 3 year old and a 2 year old, plus a baby on the way.
Jasmine explains, “We really love working with organic knit fabrics so most of our products are made using eco-materials. We tend to choose colours that we love but that we also know will work well for our customers. Our newest collection has been exclusive to us as we designed most of the patterns ourselves. We are really proud of this collection and it has inspired us to design more of our own fabrics”.
Three interesting facts about Jasmine and Amanda (in their own words):
We met at mothers group when our eldest kids were only newborns, almost four years ago, and quickly formed a great friendship.
Everything we make is hand sewn by us in our own homes.
Both of us have worked in different fields, including everything from retail, travel, to music teaching. Yet in working for Lulu and Milly we have truly found something we are really passionate about. We love the opportunity to have this creative outlet. We are really proud of the direction Lulu and Milly has taken in such a short time and have so many ideas and plans for the future.
We have kept it a family affair with both our husbands working in the business too. Jasmine’s husband Steve does a lot of our graphic design work and Amanda’s husband Ben does our accounting and bookwork. We work around our kids and spend every minute the kids are napping, sewing and creating. We truly love everything we do and feel so grateful that we can work on something we love.
