Behind the Scenes with Simone from Nomuu!

Hi folks! I hope your weekend is off to a fabulous start. Today I have the pleasure of welcoming the lovely Simone, a Melbourne illustrator who creates a series of adorable works of art under the “Nomuu” label. You may have spied her work on {KID} independent before in one of our “Creative Cravings” features. Today, you have the chance to find out more about the person behind the art!

Nomuu is…
A Melbourne illustrator Simone Downey who creates cute, quirky illustrations of deers, bears and bunny characters. My background really is in multimedia design, specifically web design these days. I also teach multimedia subjects such as web design, Illustrator, Photoshop and Flash. I only started illustrating about a year or so ago, before that I was too scared to pick up a pencil and draw.

Five words that describe my personality are…
Helpful, inquisitive, quiet, humorous and perceptive.

I would describe my design/artistic style as…
I’m not exactly sure to be honest! Maybe… quirky, cute, child-like and contemporary? I find it hard to describe my art style, since I am relatively new to illustrating. I always want to know how others would describe my work. Note from editor – I’d describe it as whimsical!

My creative process involves…
When I feel inspired, I just start doodling characters with pencil and ink. I tend to have a large stack of illustrations and when I feel compelled to {usually when I am stressed}, I bring them out of the drawer and start colouring them up in Photoshop. It’s only when I begin colouring up these illustrations that they really begin to come to life. When they are just line drawings with no colour I really don’t see their potential. They really do take on a life of their own once they are textured and coloured.

The thing I enjoy most about creating my art is…
Seeing them come to life. I enjoy the creative process, of not knowing exactly where the character is headed and then at the end seeing something I had not envisaged. Before I start the design I do have a particular style and colour palette in mind, but it usually never ends up how I envisage it. It’s like the art directs me, which is a really nice process.

I also love that people connect with my work. With comments like, “they’re adorable” or “so cute”, how can you not be chuffed?

When I sit in my office/creative space and look around the room I see…
A lot of mess! Ha ha! Yes it’s true, I am quite messy, but I am trying harder to be organised, because it really does help with the creative process. I also have a large antique desk that I design on, lots of stackable drawers, lots of art books. I don’t have much artwork on the walls, but I do have one of my great grandmothers paintings hanging on the wall.

My three most prized possessions (apart from my kids/family) are…
My Macbook Pro, my bachelors degree certificate and my brain (he he!)

When I grew up I wanted to be…
I think I wanted to be an interior designer when I was quite young. I had an obsession with interiors.  I did in fact study interior design, but it was too stuffy for me!

I actually became…
A multimedia designer and now illustrator.

The number one thing that most people don’t know about me is…
That I am really into entrepreneurial pursuits, I lap up anything about online start-up companies.

If I could trade places with anyone in the world for one day it would be…
A Melbourne entrepreneur called “Guy King”. If he sees this maybe he will in fact let me come work in his office for a day – he he! He is one of the founders of RetailMeNot, a coupon website, but what I love is tht he just came up with the idea {web designer}, put it together in a weekend just investing like $30 bucks on a domain and the site recently sold for $90 million. It’s not the monetary gain that I care about, nor the concept, it’s now that his firm has the ability to create concepts that they enjoy working on and developing.

I would love to be able to have the money to invest in great online concepts and see them come to life. I try to do that as much as possible like with my site Ammiki {a curated gallery}, but development constraints are harder when you have don’t have large budgets to invest in. So yep I would love to trade places with Guy for a day, so Ammiki could be built how I imagined – he he!

Thank you Simone, we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you better.

Behind the scenes with Natalie from tiny & little!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Natalie Barnes, editor and creator of tiny & little magazine and blog {one of my new favourite reads} and today I’m delighted to take you on a behind the scenes look at tiny & little and all the things that inspired its conception. So sit back, relax and enjoy the interview. It will no doubt make you think about just how much your own kids inspire you on a daily basis.

tiny & little magazine

tiny & little…
is named after my eldest sons who were the inspiration for starting the tiny & little blog. Unable to find pieces I wanted for their nurseries I decided to share the things I found and created for them, and it grew from there. I avoided using their real names online by calling one Tiny and one Little when writing about them, and when it came time to name my business it felt right to name it in their honour.

the journey…
to launch the magazine feels like a lifetime in the making. I’ve been creative for as long as I can remember, involved in music and dance from a young age, then writing before an interest in photography, design and magazines developed. It took another ten years before I realised what I wanted to do. Last year I decided to finally take the plunge and launch my dream magazine.

tiny & little magazine

inspiring boys…
since starting tiny & little, I’ve had another little boy, Teeny, and my three boys are a constant source of inspiration. I think of both the magazine and the blog as a way of sharing what I love most about our family life – slow childhood, fun activities and our artistic adventures. It thrills me to hear from other families who enjoy the inspiration, ideas and stories shared from my family’s journey.

real life meets the web…
i run the magazine and blog from home, allowing me to work around my children and to have my role as a mama as my focus.  When I log on at night, the visions of our day’s activities are running through my mind and it inspires me for what to do next. I’m constantly carrying my iPhone and snapping shots of the boys at play to inspire me. I think this particularly comes across in the latest issue of the tiny & little magazine, which focuses on boys and slow childhood. When I look at the issue, it feels like I’ve opened my front door and invited readers to glimpse inside my home.

tiny & little magazine

little stories…
i love sharing the creativity of my own children and hope it inspires others to let their little ones find their creative outlet too. Readers have heard things my boys have said, songs they’ve made up and in the latest issue of the magazine, seen photos they’ve taken. There are a few things in the development for tiny & little at the moment. A piece I’m particularly excited about is taking one of their stories and illustrations to create a video-book which readers will be able to read and download to share with their children.

my favourite memories from my childhood…
are too many to choose just one as a favourite. I cherish the memories of slow moments like cloud-watching, looking for four-leaf clovers, watching the sun set or the stars in the night sky and running amok with my brother on our family property, climbing trees, catching tadpoles and playing hide-and-seek. These are the moments that really make me smile and that I now enjoy sharing with my own children.

tiny & little magazine

if I were a superhero, my power would be…
to give people the ability to see the world through a child’s eyes. They’d see beauty and magnificence in things that adults overlook in our busy lives. They would embrace creativity and friendships without fear or self-consciousness. They’d feel the happiness that comes from running through a park with your arms wide while pretending to be an aeroplane.

the lead role in a move about my life would be ideally be played by…
Natalie Portman because I think she’s an amazing actress and because we’re bonded by name. Most likely though, it’d be Jennifer Garner – on a doppelganger day on Facebook I put her as my profile picture and I’m convinced some friends didn’t realise I’d changed it!

tiny & little magazine

my idea of complete happiness is…
being with my family. It doesn’t matter where we are – beach, mountains, country, city – as long as we’re together. I tell my children that our family is the most important thing, because for me it is. I love the time we spend together, although a night of unbroken sleep when I don’t see their little faces until morning would be nice since it’s been so long since the last one…

Thank you Natalie, we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you better.

Things I Love... Carrie from Ohdeedoh

Hello, I’m Carrie from Ohdeedoh. Given the economy, I can say with certitude (yes, that’s a real word!) that my favorite things this year were being gainfully employed and having a healthy family.  But that’s big picture stuff.  It’s the little picture stuff that makes life fun.  Here’s a small sampling of things that made this past year a little bit easier, more interesting and delicious for me.

  1. So happy that mustard yellow is cool again! Avocado green can’t be far behind!
  2. Sugar Plum Lip Treatment by Fresh is perfect for lazy women like me.
  3. I had no idea how attached I’d become to my iPhone this year.
  4. I love building up my son’s library and have become semi-obsessed with finding good ones at thrift shops.
  5. Trader Joe’s Chocolate Croissants are hands down the best thing in their freezer section. And I ate way too many of them this year.
  6. My son and I would not have survived the year without Brooklyn’s numerous parks and playgrounds.

All about me...

My name is…
Carrie McBride

Travel agent with a desk and a phone (I could not have dreamed of the internet).

Instead I became…
The managing editor of Ohdeedoh (I got the desk and phone at least!)

My secret talent is…
I can recall minute details from experiences that occurred years ago (like soup garnishes from 1994).  So far this talent hasn’t proven very useful.

Grammer.  Er….grammar.

It’s Nice to be Nice.
