The Cloth Nappy Hunt

Endangered Species - A Handmade Tribute

Learning about the magnificent animal kingdom is a magical aspect of childhood. A love of animals has been passed down the generations in my family, and animal welfare is dear to my heart. The sad truth is that many of these beautiful animals are now on the endangered species list. Today I ask you to spare a moment to appreciate their beauty + reflect on the importance of conservation.

Polar Bear and Giant Panda Plush Toys

Polar bears are found throughout the circumpolar Arctic on pack ice, along or near coasts, and on islands. They are currently not on the endangered species list but face an uncertain future if global warming trends continue unabated. The cool dude in the pink scarf is Rocco, a Plush Polar Bear by Strawberry Kitten.

The giant panda is native to Southwest China. It is the rarest member of the bear family and among the world’s most threatened animals. Great strides have been made in recent years to conserve the giant pandas, however, habitat loss continues to occur outside of protected areas and poaching remains an ever-present threat. The cool dude in the blue scarf is a Panda Bear by Knitting Dreams.

Elephant and Whale Plush Toys

African elephants once numbered in the millions across Africa, but by the mid-1980s their populations had been devastated by poaching. Programs are now in place to curb these atrocities, but some populations remain in danger due to poaching, habitat loss and conflict with humans. This Baby Elephant Plushie is by Kellie Noelle Designs.

Seven out of the 13 great whale species are still endangered or vulnerable, even after decades of protection. Threats include collisions with ships and entanglement in fishing gear, illegal commercial whaling, toxic contamination, and the effects of climate change and habitat degradation. Ishmael’s Whale {after the narrator of the classic novel Moby Dick} is by Flying Star Toys.

Orangutan and Marine Turle Plush Toys

The Sumatran orangutan is the most endangered of the two orangutan species {the other being the Bornean Orangutan}. Found only in the northern and western provinces of Sumatra, Indonesia, the species is fast losing its natural habitat to agriculture and human settlements. This happy fellow is a Needle Felted Orangutan Ball by Asher Jasper.

Six of the seven species of marine turtles are listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered. Programs are now in place that focus on reducing the degradation of critical marine turtle habitats; as well as unsustainable use and illegal trade in marine turtles and turtle products. This is Rocky The Turtle by Riyah-Li Designs.

The Mountain Gorilla is native to Central Africa; they are threatened by poaching, loss of habitat, and disease. Conservation efforts have led to an increase in the Virunga population by 14% in the last 12 years, and the Bwindi population by 12% over the past decade. Despite this success, the mountain gorilla remains threatened. This masked crusader is a Banksy print by Visual Creatures.

The six remaining subspecies of Tiger; Amur, Bengal, Indochinese, Malayan, South China, and Sumatran live only in Asia, and all are threatened by poaching and habitat loss. It is estimated that there are only around 200 of the white Bengal tigers left, mostly living in captivity. This White Tiger is made from Wool Felt by Nonesuch Garden.

Lion and Rhinoceros Handmade Soft Toys

Lions are the largest member of the cat family and the largest of all the African carnivores. They are facing threat from population growth and agricultural expansion resulting in loss of natural habitat, as well as hunting, poisoning and poaching by livestock ranchers. This brave crocheted lion is by Sofia-Sobeide.

Rhinos once roamed throughout the African savannas and the tropical forests of Asia. Today however, very few rhinos survive outside national parks and reserves. Conservation efforts focus on strengthening protected areas in Africa and Asia, lobbying to halt the illegal timber trade, and stamping out the illegal trade in horn. This big strong Rhino is by bubyNoa.

If you’re interested in getting involved in some conservation activities, World Wildlife Fund is a great place to start.

The endangered species facts in this post are thanks to the World Wildlife Fund and Defenders of Wildlife websites.

Eco-Sunday... Organic Kids Favourites

Sunday’s were made for sleeping in, having a late breakfast, perhaps a wander down to the park to kick about some fallen leaves… tea on the back deck in the afternoon… a freshly made batch of scones… *snap* you wake up to the sound of a wailing baby, the carnage of Saturday night {aka kids party night} and Mount Everest on the washing machine… doh!

Today I thought I’d share three fabulous eco-friendly labels that I’m currently coveting for winter wardrobe essentials. First up is the Cheeky Chickies Free Range Clothing Collection. Our second label today is a modern collection of organic baby clothing from Sydney based label Monte + Tex. Lucky number three, gorgeous organic kids jeans from Organic Boy and Friends. This Melbourne based label produces organic tees, singlets, blankets and even undies, but the denim is my personal favourite. They’re available in sizes 1-6, boys or girls and feature water based ink prints on the pockets.

Well that’s all for today friends, I hope you enjoy your Sunday afternoon. The housework can wait til Monday {or Tues… or Wed…} I say, relax and put your feet up instead. Chocolate might also help.

Play it again, Sam...

It’s 1988… I fondly remember cutting up old music t-shirts and turning them into funky creations on my Mum’s trusty Singer sewing machine. Of course, such was my sewing ability that they were lucky to make it through one hair-brush-singing-gogo-dancing rendition of ‘holiday’ by Madonna… but they forever cemented my love of upcycled creations and sparked my interest in See-Sam.

See-Sam Upcycled and Repurposed Kids Clothing

See-Sam create a range of kids clothing made from upcycled t-shirts, blended with new knit fabrics. You can expect to see a few retro favourites {think Atari, GI-joe and The Smurfs} mixed in with music tees and cool prints. I’m personally digging the pop-art number above for eclectic, stand out from the crowd dressing.

See-Sam Upcycled and Repurposed Kids Clothing

See-Sam came to life one day when designers Amanda & Rebecca were enjoying a leisurely cup of coffee while watching their kids happily playing in their back yard. Struck by inspiration, they decided to try their hand at making a range of kids clothing and accessories such as hair clips and tutus for a local Mumma’s Fair in Yeppoon, QLD. After receiving a positive response, they took the plunge and stepped into the online world.

See-Sam Upcycled and Repurposed Kids Clothing

See-Sam upcycled kids clothing is now available for purchase in Amanda & Rebecca’s Madeit Store. You’ll find a range of cool one-of-a-kind creations for kids as little as 6 months old, right through to 10 years.

Greenie Favourites... in Pink!

Happy Thursday! I think it’s about time we had another post to celebrate the work of crafty designers with their eye on the environment. After yesterday’s post, my head is swimming with pretty colours so I decided to blend both together… presenting my current greenie favourites… in pink!

Handmade, organic, recycled and upstyled

This winter I’m very fond of repurposed wool. It’s such a cool concept to make something new and beautiful from something with a rich history. One of my favourite pieces is the Cashmere Baby Dress by Kellie Noelle Designs. Pair this with tights and a long sleeve tee and top it off with a pair of boots or mary-janes for a classic winter look.

I also adore the Pink Elephant from Vintage Chenille… there is something about chenille that gives me childhood bedspread flashbacks… and makes me feel all warm and gooey inside.

Little Miss Upcycle + The Healthy Planet

Repurposed… recycled… reclaimed… the art of taking something old and unwanted and turning it into something new and treasured! If you have a few sewing skills and a bit of imagination, then why not hit your own wardrobe in search possibilities? If sewing just ain’t your thing, then perhaps you might like to follow my lead and turn to the experts… here’s a taste of what you might find!

Repurposed and recycled children's clothes and toys

The initial inspiration behind this post came from a range of custom recycled dresses that I found recently by indie designer Lillipops. This is a service where you can send in one of Dad’s {or Grandpa’s} old shirts and have it restyled into a gorgeous dress {see image above on the top right hand side for an example}. I think this is such a lovely idea, and it captures the true essence of upcycling; bringing together old memories with new experiences.

Are you a recycling expert? We’d love to hear from you… shoot us an email!

Little Red + Green Thread

Today’s post takes you on a journey into the world of Green Thread; a precious organic collection made specifically with little greenies in mind. Meet the family of playful creatures and fairytale characters, including my favourite, the magical Little Red Riding Hood.

Green Thread is the creation of designer Nadezhda Horn. Nadezhda studied fashion design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology before jetting off to the USA. It was there, after the birth of her son, that she began to build her collection of organic baby apparel and essentials.  Nadezhda draws her inspiration from childrens’ imagination and a love of nature and vintage craftsmanship.

Green Thread Organic Cotton Baby Blanket

Each Green Thread design is printed or painted by hand using high quality organic fabrics, water-based inks and low-impact dyes. The baby blanket above is made from 100% organic cotton {unbleached} and the embellishments are hand-crocheted by the very talented Annie Designs. Green Thread is based in the USA; international shipping is available.
